Imperialist realism is this notion, building off the work of Fred Jameson but really Mark Fisher, that it's easier to imagine the end of the world than it is the American empire, which is kind of depressing because I think a lot of Americans are actually quite critical today of what the United States does abroad.

Historian and foreign policy analysis Daniel Bessner joins us to discuss his new book, Imperialist Realism: Politics and Culture at the End of the American Century from Simon and Schuster.
