Neoliberalism Turning To Nature To Defend Inequality / Quinn Slobodian

One of the great myths I think that continues to persist is that neoliberalism is the desire to get rid of the state and have everything organized by the market. In fact, the whole point of neoliberalism is that you need to rethink the state in a time of mass democracy and post-imperial nationalism. So all of the things you might think about like balanced budget amendments, multi-lateral trade agreements, or the creation of new carbon markets. These are all things that require a strong state actually. Let alone questions of mass incarceration and military action overseas. Neoliberalism uses the state and refashions it for the purpose of furthering economic freedom and supressing demands for greater equality.

Author Quinn Slobodian returns to “This Is Hell!” to talk about his new book, “Hayek’s Bastards: Race, Gold, IQ and the Capitalism of the Far Right”, published by Zone Books.
