Famine Denial's Past and Present / Alex De Waal

Nov 19 2024
The purpose of torture is to weaponize that biological urge to survive. So the person being tortured is put under pain but wants to survive. But in order to survive, we'll be forced to satisfy the demands of the torturers. To give up information, to betray his or her, comrades in arms. And in the same way that societal torture that is famine means that those populations that are subject to it through siege, through occupation, through conquest, in order to survive as individuals. They betray what it is to be a functioning society. They betray the ties that bind them to their families, their communities, and so on.

Author and scholar Alex de Waal returns to the show to discuss his recent article at the Boston Review titled "Engineers of Calamity - Famine Denial's Past and Present From Ukraine to Gaza".
