Only US Enemies Can Be Drug Lords or Terrorists / Laleh Khalili

The US has been “bringing freedom” to the world at the point of a gun. It's fascinating to see the extent to which this has been the chosen discourse, because I think the alternative, the reality is really not bearable. It's not bearable to the people that are standing at the point of the bayonets, of the weapons. And it is certainly not bearable for the people that serve in the military and who have to cope with the fact that they are very often committing war crimes, whether directed by higher ups, or under that equally offensive term, “fog of war.”

Laleh Khalili returns to discuss her new piece at the London Review of Books, "Guns, Money and Opium." "The Moment of Truth" with Jeff Dorchen follows the interview.
