Covertly Manufacturing Consent for US Imperialism and Militarism in Hollywood / Tanner Mirrlees

John wayne in the longest day trailer

These movies, these TV series, these video games, these advertisements, these PR campaigns basically are reproducing a culture of militarism where war and militarism are a way of life. It's very difficult for people to think outside of that box, of being conditioned, not only by the powers that be, but by the communication and media environment to see sort of oneself, one's security and one's identity as always intrinsically tied to military superiority forever and, of course, massive public expenditures to support those processes.

Tanner Mirrlees on the new Cost of War paper from the Watson Institute for International and Public Affairs at Brown University entitled, "The Militarization of Movies and Television." "The Moment of Truth" with Jeff Dorchen follows the interview.
