Tyrannical County Sheriffs in the United States Threaten Democracy / Jessica Pishko

The constitutional sheriff movement at its core in the West really comes from a strain of apocalyptic Mormonism. This is sort of an interesting twist in terms of religion that this strain of very conservative Mormonism and evangelical Christianity have become closer together because it was not always so. In the fifties and sixties there started to develop a strain of Mormonism that was very apocalyptic, was very concerned about the end of the world, and there is a phrase that's called the White Horse Prophecy that says that we know the end is coming when, “the Constitution is hanging by a thread.”

Journalist and lawyer Jessica Pishko joins us to discuss her new book, "The Highest Law in the Land: How the Unchecked Power of Sheriffs Threatens Democracy." "The Moment of Truth" with Jeff Dorchen follows the interview.
