A Forceful History of Black Resistance / Kellie Carter Jackson

Haitian revolution black slaves killing white slavers

We don't have a corollary for that in the black community. I say this in the book, there are no four little white girls that get killed in a church right before worship. There is no white man that's assassinated in his driveway like Medgar ever was. There was no 14 year old white boy that's killed in the north while visiting his family like Emmett Till was. There is no black Dylan Roof that goes into a white church is welcomed in the white church and then proceeds to shoot up the white church. That just doesn't happen. So when we say we're terrified about the idea of black people using force, well, I kind of pushed back on that too, because I'm like, “when have you ever seen black people engaged in wholesale violence against white people?” You've seen self defense surely, but you have not seen all out violence.

Kellie Carter-Jackson returns to discuss her new book, We Refuse: A Forceful History of Black Resistance (Seal Press).

"Rotten History" by Renaldo Migaldi follows the interview.
