But what we see today in legal interpretation is something novel…What we see today with the human shielding argument, where everything above ground on the Gaza Strip can be readily cast as a human shield and therefore becomes killable. We see how the Geneva Conventions that came out of World War II in order to ensure the “never again” of genocidal violence are being used by Israel to justify its genocidal violence. If Israel gets away with that, then the whole international legal order collapses.
