It's important to recognize that both antisemitism and Islamophobia are significant problems, both domestically and across the globe. However, I think what is usually missing from the analysis is that Islamophobia has been institutionalized in American politics. It is part of the state's apparatus…The war on terror is rooted in and entrenched with Islamophobia. So we have to consider not just the way that Islamophobia is showing up societally through hate crimes, which is interpersonal violence. We also have to look at the ways in which the government specifically is deploying Islamophobia to justify state violence against Muslims.

Our final guest of the week is Dr. Maha Hilal, who wrote the TomDispatch piece, "Israel, the United States, and the Rhetoric of the War on Terror: From September 11, 2001, to October 7, 2023 (and Beyond)."
