A Tradition of Violence: Los Angeles County Sheriff Deputy Gangs / Cerise Castle

It’s very common to see the tactics of not only deputy gang members, but also deputies engaged in misconduct, being covered up and protected by the sheriff’s department. It’s really important to note deputy gangs are just a symptom of larger problem: systemic police violence which is able to be carried out unchecked without any sort of intervention from city government, state government, even the federal government. At this point, we have seen what I believe passes the sniff test of federal crimes when it comes to the sheriff’s department, yet there has been no serious intervention from the federal department of justice or the state department of justice that we can actually see. Of course there are rumors that have been swirling for the past four years that there are investigations going on. I know there is an investigation at that state department of justice’s civil rights division, but that’s not criminal. To my knowledge, I’m not familiar with anyone that is looking at this like it is something where people need to be charged criminally in mass.

Los Angeles, California-based freelance journalist Cerise Castle speaks with host Chuck Mertz about her research and reporting published on Knock LA: “A Tradition of Violence,” the first history of deputy gangs inside the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department, the largest local law enforcement agency in the United States. The investigation was published as a 15-part reporting series exposing 18 gangs, 19 documented murders (all of whom were people of color), and over $100 million dollars in lawsuits paid for by the people of Los Angeles. The podcast of the same name and subject matter is due October 19th 2022.
