People want to feel positive about their country and their institutions, they want to defend their system. And my response is 'well, let's admire different people.' If there's a White man from the 1800s that you want to glorify, it ought to be John Brown, it shouldn't be Abraham Lincoln. The reason we don't talk about what the people accomplished is - well that would be true democracy. And we don't have that. We have a lot of mythology and people trying to convince themselves their country is better than it actually is.
